Talga Technologies Limited (TTL) is the product development arm of parent company Talga Resources Ltd, a vertically integrated technology minerals company. Talga owns Europe’s largest natural graphite resources and innovative technologies for the industrial scale production of graphene. TTL focuses on developing value-added functionalised graphene and micrographite products for applications in the coatings, energy storage (batteries), building/concrete and polymer composite sectors.

 

A full time, fixed term position has arisen in Talga Technologies Ltd, for a Research Scientist to provide synthetic and electrochemical expertise to help develop next generation battery materials and technologies.

 

Specific responsibilities

 

  • Assist Talga’s research and product developmental activities on battery materials
  • Preparation of active materials using graphene, silicon, tin and other relevant materials for lithium-ion batteries suitable for Talga’s battery product portfolio
  • Optimise material characteristics through surface treatments or coatings and develop formulations for coin and pouch cell assembly
  • Characterise, scale up and electrochemically evaluate targeted battery materials
  • Communicate with key stakeholders, both orally and via reports
  • Share key findings with the wider technical team and publish in scientific journals
  • Engage with university and other industrial collaborators as part of joint R&D projects
  • Be responsible for maintaining the battery research facility and propagate good health and safety procedures

 

Requirements

 

  • A PhD in Chemistry, Materials Science, Engineering or Electrochemistry
  • Understanding of electrode and cell fabrication techniques
  • Experience of Battery material development and test cell assembly (Anodes/ Cathodes/Electrolytes)
  • Experience of preparing inorganic materials like graphene, silicon and other battery materials by variety of techniques
  • Experience of material characterisation using complementary techniques
  • Experience of Electrochemical evaluation, especially of battery materials
  • Experience of working with Air sensitive, unstable or pyrophoric compounds 
  • Experience of working in Hazardous& complex environments, (e.g. dry / explosive / particulate / vapour) 
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
  • The ability to work to tight deadlines.
  • Familiarity with Risk Assessment, COSHH, HAZOP processes 
  • Proficient in MS Office packages
