HAWKINS FIRE INVESTIGATOR NICK CAREY CYCLES FROM LONDON TO BRIGHTON FOR THE TOM BOWDIDGE FOUNDATION

  • Date 20 Sep 2021

When Dr Nick Carey of Hawkins’ Reigate Office isn’t investigating fires, he like to spend some of his free time cycling for charity. Nick has cycled the London to Brighton route for charity several times to date. The first occasion was in 1998, when he took part in the British Heart Foundation event, along with several colleagues from the London Fire Brigade’s Fire Investigation Team. There was then a bit of a gap, as the next London to Brighton event he took part in was in September 2018! We’re glad to see him back on his bicycle again in 2021.

Since 2018, Nick has since cycled both the British Heart Foundation’s and the Skyline Charities’ London to Brighton events. This year Nick will be taking part in the Skyline Charities event, and will be raising money for the Tom Bowdidge youth cancer foundation. This charity is close to both Nick and his wife Sarah, as Tom Bowdidge was Sarah’s godson. Tom was unfortunately diagnosed with desmoplastic small round cell tumours and extensive peritoneal disease when he was 18. Unfortunately, he passed away in October 2013, at the age of 19.

Preparing for the London to Brighton cycle ride is a great way to keep fit and Nick enjoys cycling across sections of the South Downs, close to where he lives. The South Downs provides excellent preparation and training for the famous Ditchling Beacon climb, which is close to the end of the London to Brighton route. Nick says it is “quite a challenge!” But, to date, Nick has been able to ride up Ditchling Beacon without needing to get off and walk. He is hoping that he will be able to also ride up it in a couple of weeks’ time!
