Special Projects Officer (Chemistry and Sustainability)

The Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) seeks a Special Projects Officer on a full-time (35-hour week) temporary basis until the end of January 2023.

With over 45,000 members and an international publishing and knowledge business, the Royal Society of Chemistry is the UK’s professional body for chemical scientists, supporting and representing our members and bringing together chemical scientists from all over the world.

Our Special Projects Team are responsible for designing, implementing and delivering highly strategic, cross-organisational programmes of work, often focussed around particular themes and global challenges. Our current Programme of work is focussed on Chemistry, Sustainability and the Circular Economy (CSCE) and the role which chemistry can play in providing a solution for the associated challenges. We are also responsible for the management of the RSC’s Library and archives and the provision of a comprehensive and high-quality Library service to our members and communities.

As our Special Projects Officer, you will support the delivery and evaluation of the CSCE programme, providing support for each of the Programme streams as well as leading on the ‘Working with our Communities’ stream. You will amplify our reach, influence and engagement through the delivery of the CSCE programme and by working with our communities, internal and external partners to deliver against the strategic objectives defined in this programme.

We are looking for:

• Degree (or equivalent) level qualification, preferably in the chemical sciences.
• Good project and time management skills are essential, including the ability to plan and prioritise work, and to meet deadlines under pressure.
• Customer focussed approach with exemplary interpersonal skills (particularly verbal and written skills) and close attention to detail and high standards of excellence.
• Proven ability to work effectively without supervision and as a member of diverse teams.
• A passion for the chemical sciences with a desire to promote and enable the positive impact of chemistry, and science generally, on social, political and economic issues.
• Creativity and the ability to generate ideas.

The contractual base for this role is our Cambridge or London office, however we are currently embracing hybrid working, and therefore you will have the opportunity to work from a location other than this, as agreed with your line manager. There is an expectation that employees will attend the offices as needed for their role. This role will require a hybrid approach to work from both our Cambridge and London offices and from home when appropriate. Some flexibility will also be required to attend out of hours events.
