Senior Editor, Chemical Science

This is a great opportunity to join the newly-created editorial team of our flagship journal, Chemical Science. As the Senior Editor of the team, you will manage a team of Assistant Editors to ensure the journal meets the strategic objectives and deliver excellent customer service for our authors and Associate Editors. Working closely with the Executive Editor and Deputy Editor for the journal, you will contribute to the strategic development of Chemical Science, through continuous development and implementation of the journal’s strategy, and by managing the day-to-day operation of the peer review and production processes. You will also be closely involved in the commissioning and development aspects of the journal, through the management of Assistant Editors as well as personal commissioning activities and direct interaction with the community. This will involve attending conferences and conducting site visits, ensuring that the needs and expectations of our authors, reviewers and readers are being met.

 

 

What you will be doing:

  • Managing a team of Assistant Editors to deliver KPIs in line with the journal’s strategy, leading and motivating the team to deliver excellent customer service.
  • Managing the team’s workflow from manuscript submission to final publication and ensuring that best practice is followed.
  • Working closely with the Executive Editor and Deputy Editor to ensure that submitted articles are reviewed to the journal’s standards and quality and ensure consistency in standards across the journal team.
  • Overseeing the operation of the journal’s external Associate Editors.
  • Carrying out the production of Chemical Science, including journal issue management, themed collections, and associated tasks, and providing feedback to the Supplier Relations Team on the quality and performance of the external suppliers. 
  • Managing ethical cases, working closely with the Executive Editor, Deputy Editor and the Publishing Ethics Specialist.
  • Collaborating with Editorial Production Managers, Journals and the Journals Operations Managers over departmental policies and processes.
  • Attending conferences both nationally and internationally and conducting site visits (2-3 trips per year in total) for personal commissioning as well as gathering feedback and developing knowledge of the community and recent scientific developments.

We are looking for:

  • A good honours degree in science (chemical science normally preferred) is essential.
  • Experience of STM publishing is essential.
  • Ability to lead, train and manage a team.
  • Good organisational and time-management skills are required together with the ability to work under pressure, prioritise and to meet deadlines
  • Willingness to travel nationally and internationally
  • A proactive approach to problem solving is required.
  • Good communication skills in interacting with internal and external contacts are essential.
  • Proven ability to work well as a team.
