The Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) has an opportunity for a Public Affairs Manager (Devolved Nations) to join us on a permanent full-time (35-hour week) basis. In this important new role, you will be responsible for managing our public affairs work across Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland so you must be able to travel to these locations as required. Office space in Edinburgh will be provided, or homeworking in Scotland can be considered, if suitable.

As Public Affairs Manager, your responsibilities will include:
- Leading, and managing others to lead, high-profile public affairs campaigns in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
- Putting in place systems and processes to support and enable devolved parliamentary and public affairs.
- Developing relationships with politicians, officials and other policy-influencers and using these relationships to gather intelligence and influence others for the benefit of the RSC.
- Managing, directly or through others, external advisors, agencies, and contractors employed as part of particular projects.
- Liaising with staff across the UK to develop and implement an integrated communications and campaigns plan for our policy influencing work.
- Liaising with RSC members across the devolved nations to inform and engage them.
- Planning, co-ordinating or representing the RSC on cross-party groups and other events in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
- Contributing to the development of the RSC’s strategy and exchanging best practice.
We are looking for:
- Degree or equivalent relevant experience.
- Track record of developing and delivering or overseeing the delivery of campaigns that have influenced policy.
- Expert knowledge and experience of the government and Parliamentary processes of at least one of the devolved nations.
- Proven ability to successfully manage internal and external relationships, developing networks and creating opportunities with tact and diplomacy.
- Excellent verbal and written communications skills, critical judgement, resilience, and composure under pressure.
- Desire to promote and enable the positive impact of science on social, political and economic issues.
- Experience of developing strategic, long-term team objectives and ways of working which flow from and align with the corporate strategy.
- Track record of success in applying project management techniques to design and deliver high-profile public affairs programmes and outcome-focused campaigns, coordinating diverse teams and activities to achieve measurable objectives.
- Understanding of the media landscape in the devolved nations and across the UK.
- Experience in developing policy, particularly in developing policy asks aimed at politicians and civil servants.
- Ability to coordinate, personally and through coaching/steering other project leaders, a wide range of team members and activities, to achieve measurable objectives.
