Graduate Data Scientist

Owlstone’s mission is to save 100,000 lives by 2020. We are developing chemical detection systems to warn people of the presence of life-threatening chemicals in their surroundings and are looking for bright, numerate graduates keen on developing a career in Data Science to help us succeed.

As a member of the Analytics team, you’ll become part of a diverse and welcoming team using data science to solve real problems. Our in-house knowledge of chemical sensing and detection is world class. It’s a highly collaborative workplace, where you will alongside colleagues from engineering, chemistry and clinical teams. You will have opportunities to try things out, succeeding or trying again in a supportive system. We use python (3, mostly), jupyter, git, Jira, Jenkins and a swathe of other tools to accommodate rapid, flexible and high-quality code development and exploratory analysis.

About the Role

The role will involve using analysis tools and databases we have developed to review the spectra and other data coming from lab testing of our chemical detectors to check for any problems, identify features of interest and ensure the data is ready for use in training the detection algorithms. As your experience grows, you would have a chance to get involved in more exploratory data analysis, learn python and get hands-on experience with common tools, technologies and development workflows used in data science.

About You

You will be a bright, organized and diligent science or maths graduate or PhD with excellent attention to detail. You must be willing to take ownership of tasks, and able to work under time pressure to deliver good quality results with minimum supervision. Previous experience in chemistry or data science is not essential.

You will be able to demonstrate:

  • Solid mathematical background
  • Experience coding in Python
  • Experience with experimental measurement and basic data analysis
  • Some experience of coding
  • Excellent attention to detail & persistence
  • Great communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a team

Most importantly, we are looking for someone who wants to make a difference, can figure out what the right problem to tackle next is and gets stuff done.


  • Degree educated in a relevant field (Science or Mathematics)
  • Proven ability to structure own work and independently progress your tasks.
  • Ability to function well within a multi-disciplinary team
  • Experience in coding in Python


  • PhD in a relevant discipline
