The Electro-Mechanical Technician will join the Engineering Department at Nuclera, interfacing with a rapidly growing team that combines experts in biochemistry, synthetic biology and engineering to develop a new desktop bioprinter to revolutionize and democratize gene and protein synthesis. The successful candidate will enable the building, testing, optimization and fabrication of components, sub-systems and instruments prototypes related to our novel synthesis platform.
The role represents a great opportunity to support our growing R&D team and to be involved in the exciting field of biotechnology research instrument development.
Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- providing hands-on engineering support in prototyping and development of sub-systems in the instrument development team
- utilising our in-house workshop fabrication capacity (e.g. milling, 3D printing, laser cutting, soldering) to fabricate custom parts and sub-assemblies, designed by the engineering team
- constructing sub-assemblies and test rigs, and perform functional testing in order to help with validation of the system
- provide reports to the team, in forms of written documentation and verbal communication, as and when required
- carry out daily tasks in line with health and safety procedures
- supporting the engineering team in drafting manufacturing documents such as work instruction and test instruction
- interacting effectively with other team members to understand and solve the engineering problems that arise
- take pride in quality, and deliver solution iteratively in an agile manner
Essential background and skills:
- At least 3 years of workshop and assembly experience in dealing with internal development or production team
- Experience in assembly of mechanisms involving electromechanical functions
- Hands-on prototyping experience (e.g. milling, laser cutting, 3D printing, etc.) with demonstrable results
- Mechanical aptitude, with high attention to detail and the ability to maintain focus
- Demonstrate ability to perform testing and validation of prototyped systems
- Demonstrate a ‘can do’ attitude with flexibility to adapt to the needs of the development team
- A team player with ability to take initiative and follow a respectful work ethic and work well with a diverse team
- A positive approach to continuous improvement activities and adhere to company PPE policies in restricted areas
Desirable qualifications and skills:
- Experience in product development with fluidic and optical/imaging functions
- Qualification in Engineering, ideally Mechanical
- Demonstrate ability to work with external components suppliers and manufacturing vendors
- Experience of electronic assemblies and working with tools and measuring equipment for testing
- Experience in developing Standard Operating Procedures for production
- Microfabrication, programming and microcontroller background is a plus
- Experience of working in projects with tight timelines with the ability to deliver on time
- Background in life science industries and desire to work alongside life scientists
- Ability to work unsupervised and with a minimal level of engineering infrastructure
- Strong communication skills and a collaborative mentality
