The Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) is looking for an Education Coordinator to coordinate and promote our activities and to develop strong and effective networks of contacts across the education system, at a regional level, throughout the East of England and the Midlands.
The Royal Society of Chemistry is the largest non-government supporter of chemistry education in the UK, and our activities encompass formal and informal education from primary science in schools, through to preparing for next career moves. We believe that everyone should have access to a high quality chemistry education, which is engaging, inspiring and relevant and invest in a number of projects and services to support chemistry teaching.
As one of our Education Coordinators, you will work with schools to increase teacher access to and engagement with our products and services, including investigating how the RSC can support schools to deliver the Gatsby Career Benchmarks and how we can increase engagement with STEM/Chemical science employers as part of that work.
You will support our Education Coordinators from the East of England and the Midlands to deliver some of their work to key audiences (Primary, Secondary and Trainee teachers), while they work on another, externally funded, project. You will also work with other key internal teams within our Education and Professional Practice Directorate to help them gain further knowledge of schools and how the RSC can best support them.
This role is available on a temporary basis until February 2020 and full-time (35-hours per week) or part-time (minimum 21 hours per week) basis. You can be based at the Royal Society of Chemistry’s Thomas Graham House, Cambridge office or home based, if suitable. You will need to be able to travel extensively throughout the East of England and the Midlands, to visit schools, work with trainee teachers, meet stakeholders and attend events, which may involve weekends and non-core working hours.
Your responsibilities will focus on:
- Build successful relationships with schools and teachers of chemistry within those schools.
- Understand the needs of individual teachers and schools in their area.
- Engage with teachers and seek feedback on our products and services to support their teaching and their student’s engagement with the chemical sciences.
- Work with teachers and careers advisers in schools to highlight the Gatsby Career Benchmarks and find examples of best practice of schools working with STEM/Chemical science employers.
We are looking for:
- A degree in science, preferably in the chemical sciences, or an equivalent qualification.
- Evidence of working with schools, ideally with a teaching qualification.
- An understanding of school level, further and higher education, and a breadth of knowledge of the education systems in the UK.
- An understanding of customer requirements, including those of: schoolteachers; school students; FE teachers, HE academics and support staff; HE students; careers advisors; employers; governments and its agencies, and non-government bodies.
- An awareness and understanding of the various types of school operating within the UK.
- Good communication skills, team working skills, organisational skills, presentation skills and the ability to work independently and be able to adapt to new circumstances.
- Experience of events management and stakeholder relationship management.
- An understanding and some experience of the requirements of employers of chemical scientists.
- Good project management skills and experience.
- Data input and analysis skills.
- Computer and IT systems literate.
