We are looking for several Development Editors to join our Journals teams in a dynamic, fast moving publishing environment. One position is available on a temporary basis for approximately ten months to cover maternity leave. Working closely with the journals' Deputy Editor and Executive Editor you will play a key role in the implementation of the editorial development strategy for a portfolio of journals.
You will be involved in widening our journals’ visibility through marketing activities, increasing community engagement amongst our authors and readers using personal communication, and keeping up to date with publishing developments from our competitor journals.
Your responsibilities will focus on:
- developing the quality of articles published in our journals through identifying and inviting articles in key topics and by leading authors;
- supporting Editorial and Advisory Board members to promote our journals, by developing good relationships through regular communication and consultation;
- initiating and coordinating themed issues, working closely with Guest Editors and potential authors;
- leading the promotion of the journals in your portfolio through social media;
- representing the journals in your portfolio at conferences in UK and Ireland;
- taking part in Editorial Board meetings by proposing development strategies for the journal, preparing papers for the meeting and minute-taking;
- competitor analysis and identifying opportunities for developing our journals in a competitive landscape;
- working across journal portfolios to support the development and implementation of their specific/individual strategies
- contributing to cross-departmental projects which support the development and implementation of the wider Publishing strategy.
We are looking for:
- a good honours degree in science (chemical science normally preferred);
- good verbal and written communication skills;
- strong analytical skills;
- ability to make sound evidence-based judgements;
- proven ability to work well as part of a team and demonstrate interpersonal skills;
- ability to take the initiative and solve problems independently;
- good organisational and time-management skills, and the ability to work under pressure and to meet deadlines;
- working knowledge of Microsoft and programmes such as Word, Excel, Outlook & PowerPoint;
- postgraduate experience and/or practical experience in STM publishing would be an asset.

*We offer a competitive Salary Progression Scheme for this role. On successful completion of probation (~6 months service) the salary will increase to £30,375, through to candidates with three years' experience in this role with good performance can expect to be earning
