  • Total Hours per week: 37.5 (80% on job and 20% learning)

About the Role


Abcam, a rapidly expanding bioscience organisation are looking for an enthusiastic Apprentice Laboratory Technician where you will be supporting routine affinity purification, peptide conjugation techniques and antibody conjugation methods. 

As an Apprentice Laboratory Technician, you will be lab-based and support the antibody Purification & Conjugation team who have a central role in the development and manufacture of our antibody products. Working as part of a team, you will assist with the everyday running of the Purification & Conjugation lab. 

This is a unique opportunity for someone who is passionate about life sciences and keen to gain practical scientific experience within a fast-paced and highly successful organisation. 

Roles and Responsibilities

  1. Support routine conjugation processes and deliver completed experiments in line with the Conjugation schedule.
  2. Record own experimental data; recognise deviations and flag to Line Manager.
  3. Support routine polyclonal and monoclonal purification processes and deliver completed experiments in line with the relevant purification schedules.
  4. Keep the team, Line Manager and where appropriate individuals in other teams informed and up-to-date by sharing all relevant experimental information.
  5. Contribute to the housekeeping tasks within the Purification & Conjugation Lab areas; assist with checking completion of the tasks when required and support co-ordinating completion where tasks are outstanding.
  6. To maintain cleanliness and maintenance of all laboratory equipment
  7. To assist in the organisation and receipt of stock items, consumables etc. 
  8. Maintain good lab records, within Production BMRs and where required, lab notebook.

About you

You will have good oral and written communication skills. You can follow and take instructions, whilst still having the ability to work from your own initiative. You are competent with using computer skills, particularly in database and word processing. Being able to organise your work and work in a tidy manner are vital to this role, so you will have excellent organisational skills and can prioritise work effectively.

Qualification requirements: 

  • Minimum of 5 GCSE’s, grades c/4 or above, these must include Maths, English and a Science subject
  • 2 A-Levels grade C or above, one of which to be a science subject (preferably Biology) or a BTEC in applied Science 
  • If you hold a science related degree, you will not be eligible for this position
  •

At Abcam, we very much encourage internal promotions and movement and therefore there could be a permanent opportunity for you at the end of your apprenticeship either in one of the laboratory teams or within a different department. This will depend on your performance, interest and successful completion of your course.
