Apprenticeship level: Level 3 Expected duration: 24 months Qualification awarded: Laboratory Technician Standard – Advanced Apprenticeship (Level 3) - This Apprenticeship is recognised by the professional bodies at Registered Science Technician (RSci Tech) level. Start date: September 2018 Monthly paid salary: £14,000 with regular increases based on performance and successful completion of exams + £1,000 completion bonus Working hours: 37.5 hours per week (80% on the job / 20% learning) Overview of your role as an Apprentice Laboratory Technician (SciQC) Abcam, a rapidly expanding bioscience organisation, are looking for an enthusiastic and self-motivated Apprentice Laboratory Technician to join our Scientific Quality Control Team. As an Apprentice Laboratory Technician, you will be lab-based and support the SciQC team to characterise antibodies, ensuring that our products are of expected high quality. You will support laboratory experiments, conduct general lab and equipment maintenance, manage lab stock reagents/consumables, adhere to quality assurance policies and any other tasks that are necessary to facilitate the smooth operation of the SciQC laboratory. This is a unique opportunity for someone who is passionate about life sciences and keen to gain practical scientific experience within a fast-paced and highly successful organisation. Your roles and responsibilities: Provide general lab support, maintain a clean and safe environment Prepare standard buffers and reagents according to defined operating procedures Prepare protein samples for Western blotting (lysate preparations) Perform Western blotting experiments Accurately and reproducibly record results Help establish a safe and efficient working environment in the laboratory Abide by laboratory SOPs and H&S documentation at all times. About you You are genuinely passionate about biosciences and about starting a career within Life Sciences You will be committed to both be successful within your role and complete your Level 3 Apprenticeship at the same time You will be a strong team player with strong organisational capabilities, able to prioritise, multitask and work to deadlines You are proactive, highly self-motivated and eager to learn new skills Basic Microsoft Office skills ie. Qualifications requirements: Minimum of 5 GCSEs, grades C/4 or above, these must include English, Maths, and a science subject An AS or A-Level in science would be an advantage but is not essential Please note the above qualifications requirements are defined by the Government and therefore we will not be able to consider applicants who don’t meet these criteria. Future prospects At Abcam we very much encourage internal promotions and movement and therefore there could be permanent opportunities in either the Scientific Quality Control Team or within a different department. This will depend on your performance, your interest and successful completion of your course.
