Analytical Research & Development Scientist (Point of Care Programme)

Owlstone Medical (www.owlstonemedical.com) is on a mission to save 100,000 lives and $1.5 billion in healthcare costs through the development and application of Breath Biopsy®. This involves collecting volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and respiratory droplets from breath, which can provide information about metabolic activity and markers related to health and disease.

Owlstone Medical has a new Analytical R&D Scientist position available within our Analytical Science department with excellent analytical and technical skills to help research, develop and validate novel gas sensing approaches for detection and identification of diverse biomarkers and new product design.

Key Tasks / Accountabilities

  • Research and develop detection strategies that enable detection and identification of diverse biomarkers.
  • Plan and undertake experiments intrinsic to Owlstone medical assay/application/product development project.
  • Present experimental findings to multidisciplinary groups.
  • Ensure experimental work adheres to department processes.
  • Theoretical research activities.
  • Experimental report writing and dissemination of findings.
  • Maintain accurate date Laboratory records.
  • Other duties as assigned per qualifications.
  • In addition to this, you will also be expected to play an active role in the success of the department. This could include acting as a technical reviewer for other projects, running, or contributing to development seminars and deputising for more senior staff as required.

Requirements

Education and Training

 

  • Degree educated in a relevant analytical science discipline.
  • Practical knowledge of working in a laboratory environment within industry or during PhD research.
  • Significant knowledge of a wide range of gas sensing technologies and clear understanding of the relative merits of each.
  • Significant practical gas handling experience.

 

Experience and Knowledge

Essential

  • Knowledge and understanding of gas sensing and detection including thin film semiconductors and spectroscopic techniques.
  • Practical experience of working with novel gas detection systems and analytical systems.
  • Experience of operating bespoke computer programmes.
  • Experience of working within a laboratory environment.

Desirable

  • Experience in advanced data processing techniques.
  • Experience of working with GC-MS instruments.
  • Experience of deconvolution techniques.
  • Experience of working with Thermal desorption systems.
  • Experience in LabView and Python.

Professional Skills

  • Self motivated and comfortable working within a small team and individually.
  • Ability to follow procedures accurately.
  • High attention to detail.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Flexible approach to changing priorities.
