This involves collecting volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and respiratory droplets from breath, which can provide information about metabolic activity and markers related to health and disease.

As Group Lead within the analytical science R&D group you will be responsible for providing departmental line management duties to a team of analytical scientists embedded within the the Breath Biopsy Programme. Enabling the adoption of new analytical techniques for new areas of exploratory method design. Ensuring that staff have the key competencies required to meet the need of the projects and timescales can be met with the available resource. Identifying future requirements for the department to meet programme needs and ensuring there is a clear way forward to meeting those needs.

You should be comfortable working in a fast-paced, close-knit team environment and keeping track of multiple projects with constantly changing priorities and deadlines, be well organised, self-motivated and have excellent communication skills and attention to detail. You will understand your own style and the impact this has on others and actively seek feedback for your own development as a manager.

Key Tasks / Accountabilities

  • Empower employees to take responsibility for their roles and goals.
  • Delegate responsibility and expect accountability and regular feedback.
  • Coach, mentor and develop staff and providing career development planning and opportunities in line with business deliverables.
  • In conjunction with the management team, contribute to the formulation and execution of the company’s short-, medium- and long-term business strategies.
  • Maintain transparent communication between direct reports and associated projects.
  • Engaging with other line and project managers across the organization.
  • Providing reports on productivity and other performance indicators to management.
  • Appropriately communicate organisation information through one-to-one meetings, email and regular interpersonal communication.
  • Provide effective performance feedback through employee recognition, rewards and disciplinary action, with the assistance of HR team when necessary.
  • Manage the recruitment process, identify key skills for the ideal candidates, shortlist, conduct interviews and select new hires.
  • To maintain an awareness of current techniques and technologies in the applicable area of analytical science.
  • Providing training and support to new hires.
  • Providing coaching and performance feedback to all team members.
  • Ensuring quality standards for all processes as ensuring analytical rigour is adhered to.
  • In addition to this, you will also be expected to play an active role in the success of the department. This could include acting as a technical reviewer for other projects, running or contributing to development seminars and deputising for more senior staff as required.

 

Education and Training

  • The successful candidate is likely to have a higher degree in a relevant analytical science discipline

Experience and Knowledge

Essential

  • Have proven experience as a strong manager, ideally in cross functional teams, with multiple direct reports.

Desirable

  • Analytical science experience preferably
  • Metabolomics or other Omics experience
  • Microbilology or Bioanalysis experience
  • TD-GC-MS experience
  • Experience of working to GxP quality standards
