One child in every average class has lost a parent. Yet for many children and young people, the death of Mum, Dad or other significant person is one of the biggest childhood traumas to overcome and it can affect their lives forever.
Children are referred to STARS because they experience loss through illness, addiction or suicide and many lose one parent leaving the other to struggle alone.
STARS is a Cambridgeshire Charity, providing counselling for local bereaved children and young people and support for their families. Counselling is free, professionally regulated and takes place in school so every child can access it. The children choose crafts and activities to tell their story, identify emotions, create memories and develop strategies to cope. With our support, children move on successfully in their lives and in the words of one child: ‘STARS stops us getting stuck’.
Another young person said: “Thank you so much for all the help and support you have given me. I have now got the confidence to face the world with a new outlook on life. I know now that Nannie is always with me and when I feel low, I can turn to my scrapbook, light my candle or sit by my rose bush. I can now close this dark chapter and turn to a new one filled with opportunity, which I didn’t think was possible before”.
Yet demand for STARS is growing and we cannot support every grieving child who comes to us. Our goal for Cambridgeshire is that every bereaved child and young person has their needs understood and met and with your help, we can make this happen.
We ask your company to consider choosing STARS as its Charity of the Year for 2020 so that together we are alongside all local children coping with grief. Here is a link to Lauren, as she talks about losing her Dad and her support from STARS
