Managing Road Safety At Work
Work related road accidents are the biggest cause of work related accidental death. Around 1000 people are killed annually in work-related road traffic accidents, that’s almost 3 people a day, and 20 people each week across the UK!
An organisation’s employees can be at daily risk through driving for work….for example if driving when tired, talking on the phone whilst driving and not giving the road their full attention, or not wearing their seatbelt when making deliveries etc.
Companies that manage the safety of their at-work drivers reap financial, environmental, and ethical rewards.
Health and Safety Law applies to driving for work activities as to all other work related activities and the risks must be managed. Additionally the Corporate Manslaughter and Homicide Act (2007) could see companies being prosecuted if they don’t manage their work related road safety adequately.
Facts and Figures:
As an employer you should put in place methods to evaluate and reduce the risks associated with work related driving. The ideal way to do this is by developing a work related road safety policy. Organisations have a duty for their employees’ safety whilst driving on work business, and to ensure that their employees adhere to these and wider road safety practices.
The Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Road Safety Partnership (CPRSP) are running the Highways Agency funded ‘Road Safety: We Mean Business’ project, and have developed an extensive range of FREE materials to assist you in developing a work related road safety policy. In addition, workshops are available, also FREE to businesses, at venues in Cambridgeshire, to inform organisations in more detail of work related road safety issues and how to construct a road safety policy.
