Owlstone Medical: Data Scientist (Algorithm Development)

Owlstone Medical has developed a breathalyzer for the early detection of cancer, inflammatory and infectious disease. Our mission is to save 100,000 lives and $1.5B in healthcare costs.  We are currently seeking excellent Algorithm Developers and Data Scientists to join the Algorithms & Data Software Group, which is responsible for delivering diagnostic and detection algorithms for our projects.

Our in-house knowledge of chemical sensing and detection is world class. It’s a highly collaborative workplace: sitting (or standing) side-by-side with colleagues from engineering, chemistry and clinical teams, you will have opportunities to try things out, succeeding or trying again in a supportive system.  We use python, Jupyter, git, HipChat, Jira, Jenkins and a swathe of other tools to accommodate rapid, flexible and high-quality code development and reproducible analysis.

About the Job:

We have ongoing major projects on breath biomarker discovery and on detection and classification of toxic chemicals in the atmosphere. The role involves analysis and characterization of measurement data (as well as other clinical data, in some cases) and development of robust data processing pipelines that can be used to produce prediction algorithms.

This will involve plenty of data wrangling & cleaning, database querying, exploratory analysis, data visualization, algorithm development and optimization, as well as reporting regularly on results and progress. You will be working collaboratively and contributing to software libraries and tools and will be expected to learn and use modern best practices in software engineering (e.g. test-driven development, continuous integration, code reviews).

This role is based in our Cambridge office.

About You:

You will have an advanced degree in a quantitative field (physics, maths, computer science, statistics, or similar) with a solid understanding of the techniques needed to extract robust inference from noisy measurement data and you will be able to show evidence of previous data analysis work you have carried out.

You will be proficient with Python (preferably) or R and be familiar with their relevant data analysis packages. And you need to be a good communicator – able to explain complicated technical concepts clearly, both verbally and in writing.

We will be looking for you to bring experience of one or more of the following:

  • Mathematical modelling of physical phenomena from experimental data
  • Statistical inference and prediction from large, noisy data sets
  • Data visualization
  • SQL and database design/data modelling

For candidates seeking a more senior position, we would also look for experience of leading technical teams, planning and coordinating activities, guiding technical decisions in projects and ideally of collaborative software development.
