Senior Consultant

Ref:
JD 637.1

Cambridge Consultants is looking to appoint a Senior Consultant into its “Smart R&D” team.
An exciting area of our business, it is an environment which offers freedom and encourages innovation, where not only can you take things forward, but where you can have a part to play in the direction of this area’s development.
This is a fantastic opportunity to work on a variety of projects, where things are done properly, where there is passion to deliver excellent work and where you can marry fantastic process expertise with technology.

Main purpose of the job

Senior Consultants hold responsibilities for developing client relationships, selling and for managing significant projects. Our SMART R&D projects facilitate improvement in our client’s New Product Development processes, structures and capabilities, often in a regulated healthcare environment (e.g. medical devices and diagnostics).  Our projects are conducted at a senior management level and our clients value our technical development and process expertise, combined with excellent project management and facilitation know how.
Senior Consultants are expected to pro-actively participate in all Campaign activities, including:

  • Creating awareness of our services and supporting the generation of new offerings
  • Developing new relationships with prospective clients through active lead generation
  • Managing and growing existing relationships
  • Generating and leading the process of converting proposals into projects
  • Leading the delivery of significant projects through professional project management

Senior consultants are expected to be equally active in selling and delivering work.
Our clients include global blue chip companies with a strong focus on the MedTech sector. Our business is primarily in Northern Europe and the USA so some international travel is expected.

Type of work undertaken by group

Our Consulting Division offers services in three fields to facilitate our clients to bring the right products to market:

  • Innovation Management – Generating radical concepts through structured idea management
  • SMART R&D – Reshaping New Product Development processes and structures to reduce time-to-market in a regulated NPD environment
  • Market Strategy – Identifying market opportunities for novel technologies

The distinctive feature we bring to our consulting work is the combination of industry understanding, market knowledge, relevant in-depth technical expertise as well as proven consulting tools and methodologies.

Specific responsibilities

  • Generation of new business

In your career to date you will have built up a good network of relevant industry contacts and you will be comfortable in maintaining and building this network with the objective to create business opportunities for Cambridge Consultants and our Consulting division in particular.
In generating new business you will also pursue “sell-on” opportunities with existing and past clients.  You will liaise with other industry focused campaigns within Cambridge Consultants to pursue a good network of senior industry contacts which may be focused on a specific MedTech segment (e.g. diagnostics, drug delivery).

  • Project management

Project managers are responsible for agreeing the focus and scope of the programmes and preparing and issuing proposals.  After managing a successful proposal, you will be responsible for delivering the project.  You will be responsible for monitoring and controlling the resources (people, time and budget) to ensure that the client’s specification and our quality standards are met within the terms and conditions of the contract.  Our philosophy is to work closely with our clients throughout all projects.  Accordingly, the right candidate will be comfortable in a high profile role; managing clients/people at a senior level (e.g. board level and/or senior divisional level in large multinationals).
Some of our consulting projects are short duration, rapid assignments carried out by a small team.  In such projects it is quite usual for the project manager to undertake a significant part of the professional services work as well.
The varied nature of the work involved will provide considerable opportunities to learn from colleagues within Cambridge Consultants as many of the projects involve team members from across our multidisciplinary technology business.

Minimum requirements

  • Significant, real product development experience in a MedTech environment – perhaps in a product or project management role
  • Clear understanding on the impact that regulations such as ISO13485 have on the development process
  • Hands-on product development experience with a good commercial and market understanding
  • Experience gained in a consultancy is a definite advantage, especially a proven track record of consultancy sales and project delivery
  • Good facilitation and workshop management skills to run workshops where an often diverse group of stakeholders need to achieve specific objectives within a defined time
  • An understanding of the strategic, organisational, technical and commercial issues facing companies in the life science and healthcare sector is essential and you should be capable of providing insights into the dynamics and challenges that these organisations face
  • An excellent first degree in a scientific or engineering discipline.  (An MBA or other commercial qualification would be considered an advantage)

We are looking for people who:

  • are driven, enthusiastic self starters that can ‘hit the ground running’
  • have excellent interpersonal skills
  • are well organised and proud to deliver to the highest possible quality
  • have the ability and desire to work across a number of industries, including MedTech
  • have an excellent academic background
