Main purpose of the job

To work within multi-disciplinary teams on major development projects, across a wide variety of market sectors, using your mechanical design engineering expertise in innovative product design and development.


Type of work undertaken by group

We combine highly creative lateral thinking with excellent technical skills, and a broad base of industry experience, to form a powerful development team. Our work includes undertaking complete product developments from concept to market, and consulting with our clients on their technology, strategy or development processes.


The Volume Products Group specialises in the design, development and transfer-to-manufacture of a wide range of complex products serving multiple industry sectors.
The main areas of expertise within this multidisciplinary group are:



  • Consumer and FMCG product design
  • Electromechanical systems design
  • Mechanical engineering
  • Industrial design and human factors
  • Authentication & brand protection,
  • Analogue & digital electronics
  • Motor & drive technologies
  • Design for manufacture
  • Manufacturing partner selection & supply chain development
  • Transfer-to-manufacture (NPI management & support)

Specific responsibilities

This is an outstanding opportunity for a design engineer with the ambition and ability to achieve excellent results in a highly demanding industry and to find novel and radical solutions to new and existing problems under tough commercial and time constraints.


You will be using your strong technical skills to make a significant contribution to development projects, from initial concepts through to final delivery. This will include:



  • Concept generation
  • Analysis and development of system architectures
  • Working closely with other engineers and technicians to implement detailed design solutions for mechanical and electromechanical systems, down to component level.


  • Proof-of-concept prototypes
  • Transfer to manufacture activities
  • Liaison with client engineers and teams
  • Working closely with external suppliers and internal production technicians
  • Writing technical reports and producing high quality design documentation

Minimum requirements

To meet the demanding requirements of this role you will have:



  • An excellent first class degree in product design, engineering or other closely related discipline
  • A genuine passion for product design, mechanics, and engineering in general
  • Knowledge of common manufacturing techniques, from injection moulding to sheet metal fabrication
  • A creative approach to problem solving and concept generation
  • An appreciation of the use of engineering analysis in product development
  • Advanced use of 3D CAD tools, preferably Pro-Engineer and / or SolidWorks

In addition, qualifications and experience in the following areas would be beneficial:



  • Some relevant industrial experience
  • An appreciation of the use of engineering analysis tools in product development including CFD and FEA.
