Building Services Electrician (no agencies please)

Main purpose of the job

As part of a small team you will:

  • Carry out all electrical works, servicing and repairs
  • Organise service contractors, particularly electrical contractors, with the Building Services Coordinator, and supervise them
  • Maintain and make minor modifications to the buildings and their services, over the whole range of building issues
  • Identify maintenance and repair tasks that need doing
  • Act as a front line support in investigating problems and implement temporary and then permanent repairs

Type of work undertaken by group

Routine activities carried out by the team include the changing of light bulbs and the repair of broken doors or furniture, as well more physical tasks such as the moving of office furniture, heavy items and boxes, the construction of office or laboratory partitioning and providing assistance to subcontractors with a variety of work.
Because of the nature of the work, some flexibility on working hours may sometimes be required.

Specific responsibilities

  • Take full responsibility for all electrical activities – identifying routine and repair tasks, carrying out (or arranging via contractors) all such tasks by liaising with the Building Services Coordinator. This may include electrical installation and repair work, covering fixed wiring and appliances, from specifying to completion of the job
  • As part of a small team, you will identify and assist with various tasks, from a complete range of crafts – skilled, unskilled or physical – including coordinating with the requestor where applicable
  • Contribute to the services provided by the team, including building-related Health & Safety issue

Minimum requirements

  • You will be a fully qualified and experienced electrician – qualified to C&G Level 2 in Electrical Engineering plus IEE 17th Edition, together with relevant experience across a wide range of electrical activities
  • You will have the basic skills and ability to carry out a wide range of practical construction and repair work, which may include specific skills such as carpentry or decorating
  • You will be capable of working with minimum supervision, and able to prioritise your daily workload
  • Basic numeracy, literacy, and computer familiarity are required
  • Excellent communications skills
  • You will be required to undertake training in key areas where necessary, such as in the use of power tools, hand tools, access equipment, and fork lift trucks.
