About the role

The Senior Data Scientist will be responsible for driving and leading using machine learning techniques to assist with the company’s product development and enhance its marketing capability. The role encompasses orchestrating how Abcam uses both internal and external semi-structured/unstructured data to predict future R&D opportunities as well as developing real-time algorithms to deliver personalised marketing and web experiences.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Show and mentor the organisation how to leverage data to answer complex problems
  • Innovate and provide solutions for the business. Some of the problems encountered may be solved immediately; others will require, in concert with key stakeholders, the ability to first translate a complex commercial difficulty into a well-defined problem.
  • Innovate and implement machine learning algorithms that discover actionable patterns or inform hypotheses and insights.
  • Clean and link complex datasets.
  • Work in an Agile way to participate in cross-functional projects for designing and testing new algorithms and models.
  • Collaborate with marketers, other data scientists and analysts, engineers and software developers to build scalable solutions as needed.
  • Encourage the use of data science and data-driven decision-making in the larger organisation.

About you

You have experience with seeing data science projects through from the initial idea to production software, in a position of responsibility as well as being an expert in analysing large, complex, multi-dimensional datasets with a variety of tools.

You have a solid expertise in data mining, machine learning, optimization and simulation. You have some experience in an analytical/algorithm/data/software development role. Some experience within on-line ecommerce environments is desirable.

You will have some experience with at least one of the following: Python, R or Scala and experience with commonly-used open source data science libraries in the language of choice, e.g. statsmodels and scikit-learn in Python. Experience with Java and with productionalising prototype code are preferable.

You will have experience with predictive algorithms: Bayesian models, random forests, SVMs, deep learning, etc., and an understanding of their theoretical properties and the circumstances under which they are appropriate or not.
In addition, you have experience dealing with data exploration: clustering, feature extraction, dimension reduction, etc. and have the ability to ingest, manipulate, clean and transform large unstructured datasets.

You can translate complex results into clear insights and communicate verbally and through compelling written documents. You are highly collaborative and able to adapt and learn quickly in a changing environment as well as being a self-starter. You are able to prioritise and manage projects successfully.

You will hold a Degree in a rigorous quantitative field such as for instance computer science, mathematics, statistics, physics, machine learning. A PhD in a numerate subject and life sciences experience are desirable.
