How to get to the Park
5,000 people are employed in over 100 companies on the Park and there is a need to secure change in the way people travel to work.
The 2009 Travel for Work survey has yielded the following data:
Surveys have shown that a significant percentage of the Park’s workforce might change from driving to work on their own if the other alternatives such as public transport were more attractive; hence the green commuter plan.
PLEASE BE REMINDED THAT THE SPEED LIMIT ON THE CAMBRIDGE SCIENCE PARK IS 30 MPH.
Travel Plan Plus (TP+) Project
TP+ is a European Commission funded project to help organisations reap the benefits of combining in a travel plan network. The Travel for Work Partnership (www.tfw.org.uk) is managing the project on behalf of Cambridgeshire County Council and the project is relevant to all employers on the Cambridge Science Park, Cambridge Business Park, St John’s Innovation Park, Cambridge Regional College and Taylor Vinters Solicitors.
The project includes the establishment of a “commuter centre” based in the Cambridge Science Park Innovation Centre (Unit 23) close by the Trinity Centre Conference facility. Staff at the “commuter centre” can provide information and advice on using sustainable travel options for commuting to and from the site as well as advice on how to reduce business travel. In addition there is a comprehensive range of literature available on all the main sustainable transport options including car sharing, cycling, public transport (including trains and busses) and walking. TP+ run regular events and initiatives and a monthly newsletter is available detailing current activities.
A dedicated website is currently under development – however full details of the service can be found on the Travel Plan Plus website.

The green commuter plan
Improved cycle access and new cycle ways have been provided on the Park. In addition a number of secure covered cycle stores have been provided in the Park’s communal car parks; at the expense of car park spaces. In new buildings, showers are being provided, and cycle parking is increasing to 25% of the workforce. With 25% of Science Park company employees living within the city, a good bus service is crucial. A cross town shuttle service running from the Babraham Park and Ride through the City Centre to the Science Park now runs every 15 minutes throughout the working day.
Trinity College has funded many of the preceding initiatives. Individual companies can play a role by encouraging alternatives to the car and by supporting cycle friendly initiatives including the provision of cycle allowances, bike loans, shower facilities and car pools.

Car sharing
Companies on the Cambridge Science Park have been registered to use CamShare, the web-based car sharing database for Cambridgeshire. Individual employees of these companies can sign up to use the car-sharing service.
For more information see www.camshare.info.
Cycling
Cycle-friendly facilities
Every new building on the Science Park is provided with covered and lit cycle racks which are imported from a specialist manufacturer in The Netherlands. Requests from tenants for the provision of extra cycle storage facilities are given priority.
In addition, all new buildings have shower facilities to enable cyclists (and others) to change and freshen up before they start work.
